1300年前的影片,究竟啥样?影评大揭秘!

Back in 2017, I was fortunate to extend an invitation to Jerome Hiler for a captivating presentation at the Harvard Film Archive, which was named "Cinema Before 1300". Jerome's lecture, a piece he had shared on multiple occasions, caught my attention with its unique title and fascinating subject matter. The discussion revolved around the medieval art of stained glass, enriched by Jerome's personal collection of still images captured over the years, predominantly within the cathedrals of France and the UK. These images represent some of the last vestiges of this once radiant art form. The experience was both enthralling and deeply emotional, offering a contemplative exploration of stained glass as both a popular and a devotional art form, and its significance as a precursor to the cinema.

Jerome's talk left an indelible impression, prompting me to propose the idea of transforming his lecture into a digital film that could be shared online, thus extending its reach. The idea was revisited during the pandemic, and Jerome graciously consented to expand his work, meticulously rewriting and narrating his lecture anew. This enriched version of "Cinema Before 1300" now includes additional visual material and Jerome's personal insights and profound reflections, making the film an enriching experience. The film is accessible for viewing through the Harvard Film Archive website from December 14 to March 15. Following this period, it will continue to be available for online viewing upon request to the HFA Collections staff.

Although "Cinema Before 1300" is tailored for the smaller screen, it is no less spectacular when viewed on the big screen. The HFA has additionally crafted a DCP version of the film, available for theatrical screenings upon request.

Over eight centuries ago, a convergence of technological, philosophical, and financial advancements led to the creation of the most sophisticated form of mass media known to the world at that time: stained glass. Numerous grand cathedrals were constructed across France, Spain, England, and Germany, each designed to showcase vast windows that narrated stories through the interplay of light, color, and form. Every day, throngs of viewers would gather to admire the vibrant hues and listen to tales brought to life by the light. Modern visitors to these cathedrals might not realize the myriad activities that took place within these structures during the medieval era. They were indeed the heart of the community, and community members had every right to be there, as they all contributed significantly to the construction of these architectural marvels.

This program delves into the first century or so of the splendid inception and culmination of stained glass. It was during this serendipitous period that the utmost care, effort, and resources were dedicated to this nascent art form. Ironically, technological advancements that made glass production more uniform and simplified the craftsmanship led to a loss of visual intrigue and ultimately to the decline of the art.
